Having lifted 55 gallon barrels with an engine hoist, I will offer this advise.
BE CAREFUL..... barrels are tough to grab hold of, and chains slip... Best effect I've had is using 2 inch nylon wide lifting slings, using them as "chokers". Best result moving barrels is with a fork lift. If you have access to one, use it.
