Actually, the US went Metric long before there was an SAE system.  Ask Model T 
owners about wrenches, for instance.

The US Army went metric in 1911 when the system was officially adopted.  The 
Navy stayed inch based for a very long time even though there wasn't much of a 
Navy in 1911.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards date from the 1920s when auto 
manufacturers needed suppliers for standardized parts like rear axles, wheels, 
transmissions, and so forth.  Before that they all made their own, and 
"standards" varied quite a bit.

Ball and roller bearings have always been metric.
