An EV works for that, as long as your common day's driving fits within the 
car's practical capacity (which I define as going from 80% charge to 20%, 
battery life suffers if you go much past that). 
Filling an electric is much less hassle than filling a fuel tank if you park 
indoors. 
Just get out of the car, spend 30 seconds plugging it in, and that's that. 
Unplug it in the morning when you leave again. 

Then you have to have a plan for uncommon drives that exceed your EV's 
capacity. 
If they happen once a month or less, just rent a Malibu. 
Once every week or two, you'll be happier if there's an internal combustion 
engine in the household for those drives. 

If there's level 3 charging available (without waiting in line for an hour) 
along your trip route, driving the EV on a one or two day trip can be less 
hassle than renting a car, but it's still more hassle than having a fuel burner 
of your own to take on trips.
