Just for grins, have you tried cycling the circuit breakers?  There should be 
two 2-pole breakers (one for air handler and one for condenser).

When I returned about noon one day my new Carrier heat pump was making a loud 
banging noise and was not producing heat.  Cycling the breaker fixed it.  I 
left it off for 5-10 min.
