A hybrid water heater uses a heat pump, just like you would have on a house, to 
extract heat from the surrounding atmosphere and use it to heat the water. Very 
efficient compared to a resistive heating element.

My hybrid water heater costs about $150-$200/year to operate, if that. Compare 
that to a similarly sized heater with resistive elements that will cost 2x-3x 
that.
