Anything to worry about on this model? I'm with Curt.I have some exposure to "Subies" as they are "the" car to drive in Flagstaff, and understandably so with all the off-road activities here along with the winter. Speaking with some of the locals, later, as in mid 2000s and newer, are supposed to be quite robust. I believe the head gasket issues are in the older models and limited to a specific engine. They appear to be quite versatile as well as rugged.-D________________________________From: Mercedes <[email protected]> on behalf of Allan Streib via Mercedes <[email protected]>Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2023 1:44 PMTo: Mercedes Discussion List <[email protected]>Cc: Allan Streib <[email protected]>Subject: Re: [MBZ] Looking for car for sonny boy.Only concern I’ve heard with Subarus is head gasket leaks.I’d avoid Honda, people praise them but I’ve had bad luck with their automatic transmissions. For your budget you should be able to find a nice E or M class also.On Tue, Jun 27, 2023, at 13:15, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote:Sadly a Subaru is probably a solid choice. Most all of the Subaru choices are solid vehicles and as long as you
steer away from the boy racer models (WRX springs to mind) they don't
tend to get hooned too bad. They also not terrible to drive. I had
occasion to drive an early 2000's Forester that was a solid, if
slightly boring ride. Realistically I should have bought the wagon that
Dwight had years ago, probably would have saved me money vs getting
involved with old "cheap" Mercedes...

My son, Andrew is beginning search for used vehicle. He is a 25 year
old student who will hopefully be starting Med school in the next 6
months or so. He has been driving our 1991 Civic for several years but
it has been sold due to some rust and high mileage. Actually got $2000
for it!
He is pushing for a Subaru Impreza or something similar. I am
discouraging this and looking more toward a Mercedes all wheel drive in
the $8-10,000 range and would like to get something that is from the
south that is relatively rust free. (My daughter lives in Austin).
I have 2 300D’s and he is driving one of them now but I don’t want him
using it in the winter due to the salt and rust issues.
Any thoughts about what we should be looking for would be welcome. Or
even better does anyone have anything we might interested in? We live
in Michigan.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
