Figure 16 mpg average around town. With a tailwind and light foot you can cross 
20 mpg on the interstate.

I'm with Curt.

I have some exposure to "Subies" as they are "the" car to drive in Flagstaff, 
and understandably so with all the off-road activities here along with the 
winter. Speaking with some of the locals, later, as in mid 2000s and newer, are 
supposed to be quite robust. I believe the head gasket issues are in the older 
models and limited to a specific engine. They appear to be quite versatile as 
well as rugged.

Only concern I’ve heard with Subarus is head gasket leaks.

I’d avoid Honda, people praise them but I’ve had bad luck with their automatic 
transmissions.

For your budget you should be able to find a nice E or M class also.
