Wouldn’t all those components (springs, the wee shock absorber) wear out at the same rate?

I’d be inclined to invoke the “since you’re in there” school of repair…unless one of the components is wicked expensive.

As I recall, if it’s not cracked or broken, you’re good. Mine had a crack in one of the windings of the spring, so I replaced it. I suspect if things get bad enough when the little shock absorber fails it stresses the spring, too, after a while.

This was a pretty easy repair as I recall.

So I finally got to replacing the serpentine belt on the 90 300D 2.5Turbo.

The belt broke leaving me stranded a couple of months ago. I attributed it

to the idler pulley being seized but it’s not actually seized. When the

belt shredded apart, bits of it got wedged behind the pulley giving the

impression that it was seized. So my question is what caused the serpentine

belt to fail catastrophically? The belt drive has been making a rattling

noise for a few years now so I assumed it was the pulley but it doesn’t

seem to be bad. I have a new one on hand so I will replace it anyway. I’m

just worried that there is some other problem.
