Common, mainly because the back corners are anchored to the rear (C) pillar under the paneling that covers the pillar, and as the material ages it shrinks and pulls out. It’s probably got some of the brown discoloration on it as well.
I can’t speak to the W108s, but four years ago or thereabouts when I was doing the W111 220SEb a new headliner, complete from Mercedes, was under $200 and on the shelf in Germany. But - it cost quite a bit to have it replaced. That’s mainly because I had both from and rear glass removed so new seals could be installed.
