The wastegate opens on '90s Mercedes diesels when there isn't proper EGR function or if there is excessive boost sensed at the intake manifold (I believe). In the '80s OM603.96 engines brought to the US the wastegate ONLY opened when boost pushed the wastegate open. LOTS of little differences. The computers are VERY different.
