Thanks to all who wrote so far --
I'll respond to your comments -
Thermostat - new - replaced last March.

GPs are new - replaced last week. However, one GP was definately bad - possibly 2, based on the pre-glow light not coming on until the engine fired up, then the light stayed on for about another 30-40 secinds or so.

Short trips - very few - my wife drives the 300D to work 4 X's per week - 105 mile round trip. Before we bought the car it only had 99k miles on it - which is approx 6500 miles per year - but after 6+ months of these lengthy trips hopefully the bad aspects of those short trips are mostly behind it.

It certainly drives much better now that it has these long trips under it.

As far as chain stretch is concerned, - that's on the agenda to check next week - if stretched more than 4 or 5 degrees I'll replaced the TC.

re: the comments about the Injectors --- this is probably something I may need to get someone to check for me.

re: a friend in the Oil Analysis business - yep, I'm in the Oil Analysis business - it was a poor attempt at humor -

Thanks for all the quick responses -

Howdy -
I did an Oil Analysis on my '91 300D for the 1st time (I have a friend in
the business) ;-) since buying it in Feb 06 - and the Fuel content in the
oil is 3.1%. While that's well within the acceptable range I'd hope it
would be lower.

I thought YOU were in the business.
I might be inclined to test the GPs, and maybe pop test the injectors or
do a power balance check. A dead GP or misfiring injector could leave
unburnt fuel in one cyl.
