Well, I'm pretty sure it's starting in 1st as the engine is at about the
same speeds as when I manually select L like up the hill tonight...
It certainly seems like I'm missing a gear...

Your car starts in second gear unless you punch it really hard from a
start
or have manually selected 'L'. It is a four speed.

If it's a manual, we really need to work on our clutch skills if it's
shifting
hard :)
