As I said, your alternator is shot.

Got the car started and the light goes out while it is running. I haven't

when key is the ready to start position.
I have never seen the light on while key is off and out of the ignition.
I moved car into a slightly warmer than the outside garage and will check on
it tomorrow when the sun is shining or at least I will have light.
My trusty 1983 240D is doing a good job as my backup.
