Just to be perfectly correct (something I seldom get to be) the proper name 
is hydropneumatic conpensating strut (IIRC)

When I installed one on my W108 I didn;t use a spring compressor - I 
adjusted the wheel (left IIRC) with a floor jack as the whole rear of the 
car was supported on jack stands - until the spring mounting plates aligned 
with the mounting holes.
It's been 25 years - maybe 30 or more since I did that so my memory may be 
wrong -
