I was over at Sams earlier this morning, took a look at various panels.
Contrast ratio ran all the way from 1000:1 on an Olevia 50some" to
25000:1 (or something like that) on a Sony that was a bit smaller, with
prices to match. The Olevia looked like a washed-out watercolor, while
the Sony was razor-sharp. The Samsung I looked at was about 10000:1 and
looked pretty good. I am not sure how well the eye can see the 2.5:1
difference between the better panels, but the 10:1 between the Samsung
and Olevia was extremely noticeable. There was an older woman there
looking at a Samsung, I mentioned I thought they were about the best
value, and she agreed, and was shopping prices/sizes.

YMMV.
