Yours is different than mine then. The older cars had a definitely more anemic peeper inside than the vigorous buzz of our later cars. The earlier ones are just a relay rigged to cut its own power when actuated. Makes enough noise doing so to serve as a sounder. You could try replacing that relay with another one from a surplus site or something like that.
