Utah does indeed have its own build system, but it's autoconf-based, so
if you want to write a detection check, I'd be happy to include it. We
already cribbed the isa-extension support tests from you. :)

Debian 2.2 (currently in freeze) is using binutils 2.9.5.0.31, so there
are definitely new versions available, though the url given puts the
original source in a 'beta' directory. Given the age of the 2.9.1 series,
the the conservative policies of Debian, I'd expect any new distribution
to ship 2.9.5.

The latest version at ftp://ftp.varesearch.com/pub/support/hjl/binutils/
is 2.9.5.0.34, dated 2000 April 4. The release notes still call it a beta,
but nearing public release.

P.S. I note we haven't heard an 'upgrading binutils fixed this for me'
from the original reporters. I'll prod them.
