"What would Photoshop do?" answers to me that it would definitely not repeat the pixels around the edges in a scaling algorithm. Also, nothing in the standard stipulates gluScale would look-up warped pixels. Advantage: better quality for warping pictures. Disadvantage: impossible to use for non-warping pictures. That said, I agree with you the best way to get what I want is by using my own scaling algorithm.
