Possibly, but more likely the old 3D driver.

Heh, it's slightly more complicated than that.

Not quite. You won't need to disable AIGLX to use tfp with direct
rendering, in fact doing so may prevent it because it replaces the 3D
driver on the server side with software Mesa. But that's speculation at
this point. OTOH it's probably just a bug that it doesn't currently work
with AIGLX disabled, but it wouldn't be too interesting without
acceleration anyway.
