These are hardly less complicated, and have the disadvantage of not
being widely used.  We haven't hit any automake-induced portability
problems yet, despite building across various Unices (we can't build on
HP/UX, but that's due to the usual header portability crap that we have
to deal with in order to get fds_bits; the build system worked
absolutely perfectly), including Mac OS X, and at one point also
Windows.

If you want to write both a 3D library and a build system, though,
that's your choice.
