In any case, the answer is that this lies in the 'rough edges' Thomas was 
talking about when he pushed the driver.  Basically this code is two years old 
and apart from bugfixes and the update to run against modern DRM & Xorg, 
nothing has been done to it in the meantime.  I suspect you'd need DRI2 support 
to get the functionality enabled which you're looking for, and that the current 
driver advertising the extension client-side is actually an error.

We're not really intending to do a lot of work on the i915tex driver, just to 
have it in continued existence to illustrate another approach command 
submission, etc.  Our primary focus is on Gallium & the drivers that will come 
from that.  

If you wanted to dig into the reasons for this error & figure out if something 
can be done about it, it'd be great.  Possibly asking under a different subject 
line might better attract the attention of the GLX gurus...
