The PM4 packets from 5xx and earlier do not work on 6xx and higher,
although I guess there may be an exception or two. The old BITBLT
operation went away starting with 6xx. The transition from 5xx to 6xx
was relatively small on the display side but all the other blocks are
significantly different, other than the basic idea of a ring buffer and
command packets.

The 6xx parts had some ability to emulate the old packets using CP
microcode and the 3D engine, but we did not make use of emulation since
it was not available on 7xx and we were trying to write a driver which
worked on both 6xx and 7xx at the same time.

Subject: [Mesa3d-dev] r6xx-r7xx PACKET 3 missing codes

Hi,

I'm just curious... Are the old PACKET3 IT_OPCODES from r5xx and packet
formats for 2d operations still valid or they have to be replaced by
some complex 3d operations instead ( IIRC r7xx no longer have a 2D
engine - is that why there are problems implementing a vram to vram copy
- old BITBLT operation? )

Best regards,
  Radu
