I believe the <GROUP> tag is created when you apply the "Group" style to
text, but I don't know whether you could exploit it in the way you are
suggesting.

I've done some work with hypertext links in my projects, but I've been
able to use a combination of lookup tables and custom properties to
accomplish the task. What are the reasons that this approach wouldn't
work for you? Maybe we can help you find an alternate solution.
