Couldn't you minimize the delay by putting the following code in an
openStack handler? (or
in some other handler that executes before the sounds are needed)

    prepare videoclip "sound1.wav"
    prepare videoclip "sound2.wav"
    prepare videoclip "sound3.wav"

I haven't tried it, but if you can play a .wav as a videoclip it seems
like you could also
"prepare" it.
