jpegs become grainy when imported

Hi folks,

When I imported some jpeg images into a stack, their smooth background
color became grainy. Is that because their bkgnd color is not in the
color palette MC is using at the time, or what?  I think I could figure
it out with some experimenting, but don't have the time right now.
