Probably they started at 16- or more bits, or as you indicate used a custom palette (less likely). If MC supports it, try doing a pattern dither for the images, or better yet importing them at their native resolution. Else open them in Photoshop or an equivalent *high-quality* image editing app and dither them down to an 8-bit system palette there, applying the editor's interpolation to smooth them. --WthmO
