Moving from Mac to Windows is the easy way because Mac fonts are larger so
you don't lose anything.
(Moving the other way can mean that there isn't enough room in a line or
even small field.)
Even the easy way you can have problems with appearence because the short
lines look odd.
There is no easy answer to that one so it is still strongly advisable to
look at it cross-platform
throughout development.
If the fonts are on your target machines then that is one problem removed -
hard to imagine
anyone removing both Arial and Helvetica but ....!
Another cross-platform SansSerif font that I prefer to both those fonts is
Verdana. It is much clearer.
Times Roman is the principal cross-platform Serif font.
