Does it appear to function as a standalone? Can you, for instance, copy
it to a zip disk and run it on another Mac which does not have MetaCard?

Not necessarily anything. I've run into some extremely peculiar behavior
with StuffIt's most recent incarnations -- it sometimes appears to
uncouple data and resource forks on executables, for instance.

Try re-creating the initial program under a different name (really!) and
restuffing it.
