You can open the "standalone builder" from the Tools menu.  It's got a
help button.

You might try using the tabstops property.  It doesn't allow editing
like a spreadsheet, but the display is similar.

As has been discussed on this list (search the archives), it is not
even theoretically possible to save into standalones on Windows or
UNIX, and it's not supported or planned to be supported on Mac OS.
You'll have to save into a separate file or stack.
