They have twice the RAM of my own PC, on which the movies run okay.
(I've got 64 megs, they've got 128.) No other apps were open that I know of.
Here are some symptoms:
1. The stack has about 12 movies, some quite large. No matter which one
is played first, it plays without incident. Subsequent attempts to play
movies by clicking other buttons freeze the entire system.
2. One of the movies is a dependent QT movie (i.e., a movie of file
references only) that strings together all the other movies so the user
can see all of them sequentially with a single click. That one plays
okay too, as long as it is the first movie selected to play.
3. All the movies play fine in QT Player on the problem test machine,
and any number of movies can be played sequentially. The freeze only
occurs in MetaCard. This would seem to eliminate the QuickTime version,
the graphics card, or the CD driver as the culprit (I think?)
4. When the stack or app freezes, it seems to be when the current movie
tries to close. The player object remains on screen, open to the last
frame. The entire system freezes, not just MetaCard. The user cannot
quit, switch to other windows, or operate menus. Force-restart of
Windows is required.
5. The same stack and/or app works without incident, exactly as it is
supposed to, on my own PC (a generic hand-built Pentium III/450), which
has less RAM and fewer mhz than the client's test machines (which are
all Dell Pentium III/500s, probably identical. All three show the same symptoms.)
6. Both the client and myself are running the latest version of
QuickTime and (as of today) the newest beta of MetaCard. I haven't heard
back the results of his testing with the new MC beta, but Scott Raney
doesn't believe the changes in the beta will address the problems we are having.
Any other ideas? Please?
