Yes, we are, and it still impresses me enormously that it can be
done. It took quite a long time before I ventured into it, perhaps
the talk about it on the list was too 'computerese' for me... I'll
explain it in plain words for all those who have not tried it out so
far:
The students download a portal stack (which I have called
"FraMeny.exe" or only "FraMeny" on Mac).
This stack remains permanently on the students' PC. In the stack
they select the various pedagogical programs, for instance a program
on French Poems/Terminology ("FranPo"). What happens is that each
time they click in order to work with "FranPo", it is downloaded from
the server (it goes very fast). Once in the program, all the images
are downloaded 'on openCard' (for instance pictures of the various
poets) and if they want to listen to a poem, the soundfile is
downloaded ad hoc from the server.
When they have finished working, nothing is left behind on their
computers (not even in the cache folder) except the portal stack.
What I have to do (this goes for Mac and Windows):
1. The portal stack has to be saved as a standalone on each platform.
These two stacks (about 3 Mgb each) are uploaded to our server.
2. All the images (in .jpg format) and the soundfiles (in .au format)
are uploaded to the server.
3. The pedagogical programs are uploaded as they are (they are not
made into standalones). Whenever I make a change in a program, I just
take the new version of the stack (for instance "FranPo.mc") and
uploads it to the server. This is just one stack, it does not even
matter on which platform I last saved it: it works well for both Mac
and Windows users.
4. "FranPo" opens atop the portal stack. When the students have
finished their work, they click "QUITTER" on no matter what card in
the program.
In 'on closeStack' in the various pedagogical programs the script
must contain 'close this stack' and then the students are back in the
portal stack and can choose other programs or quit the work
completely.
I have discovered that if they quit the program on other cards than
the first one, and then immediately download the same program again,
this will be opened on that same card, so I have inserted 2 more
lines in 'on closeStack': 'lock screen' and 'go cd 1'.
So, in conclusion, no need for plug-ins, and it works extremely fast
and well (thanks to Scott Raney and Sivakatirswami). I have not
experimented with video so far, that will be my next step.
Best regards
