I recently got introduced to "Dlog" (http://www.dlogusa.com/f_solutions.html). It is a fairly in-depth package, but allows for some pretty nice stuff: The operator keys in the part number and sequence/operation at a PC on the shop floor (multiple machines per terminal). The software prompts for which machine (multiple machines and processes are maintained), then displays the part program and any other associated documents (blueprint, process drawings, tool sheets, inspection sheets... whatever you want). The download / upload is taken care of at the PC; the company even hard-wired ALL of our machines into the data lines for us. (No small task on the older machines!) The documents are all read-only; Dlog supplies a viewer that supports most CAD formats, as well as all the MS Office formats - word, excel, etc. All of the files can live wherever you've got them already, Dlog simply has to be told where to find them. And if your routers already have program numbers listed on them, the setup can be done automatically. The system is pretty fool-proof, and with the right security on the PCs on the floor (StormWindows), they become dumb terminals only... no games, porno sites, or locally-stored copies of programs. It's a very cool package; I would highly recommend it for a larger shop.
