Yup, always fall down that hole, so:

Start your system and go to a command prompt since I assume X is not
working:
sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk envyng-qt envyng-core
sudo envyng -t

The cool thing about envyng is that it does it all! It will download the
correct nVidia or ATI driver, will
compile it and setup X-Windows ( best of all it will un-screwup your
system if you messed it up ).
Remember if you are using any "closed source" drivers to NOT use the
Gnome controls but ONLY use the control program that shipped with the
drivers to set the video card ( resolution color etc. )
