My initial guess was completely off-base.The problem has nothing to do
with the nvidia driver. The problem is that the upgrade procedure did
not update my grub.conf.(Shouldn't it do this?). I manually updated
grub.conf, and now Ubuntu 8.04 boots correctly.

What problems are caused by using the Gnome controls to set resolution?
I used the Gnome controls to change resolution in Ubuntu 7.10 and didn't
notice a problem. The upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 erased the memory of my
resolution change and I once again have to change it. Secondly, where
can I find the "control program that shipped with the drivers"? As far
as I recall, I obtained the nvidia driver in Ubuntu 7.10 by using one of
the Ubuntu controls and specifying something like "use restricted
driver".
