Thanks to John Puhalski, John Mort, Sean Dague, and Hal Cohen for your offers. Sean: I'd like to try one of your spare NICs. Let me know a day, time, and place, and I will pick up the card. I'm still not online from home, so there can be a day's delay before I see my email. My home phone is 454-4367 (covered by answering machine.) I have a spare PC which I haven't used for two years. It is (unpatched) WinME only. It has an integrated NIC. I've only used the PC with dial-up. I hooked up my "thunderstorm damaged" DSL modem to the PC and the modem was fine. (This PC doesn't have AV or Firewall, so I can't use it for Internet access. It does have a CD drive, so I could run a Knoppix CD. I haven't learned how to go online from a Knoppix CD). I guess "ethtool eth0" really isn't a diagnostic for the NIC. The damaged NIC is an Intel PRO/100 M. It has a Windows only diagnostic program which I've previously run under WinME on my multiboot PC. When I tried to run it this week, the Intel icon was on my WinME system tray, but the diagnostic program was nowhere to be found. _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) MHVLS Auditorium Jun 4 - Sqeak! and eToys Jul 2 - KVM (Tenative) Aug 6 - Zenos Sep 3 - TBD
