Is there a bios update available for that mobo?

It is a Phenom 9850 Gigabyte motherboard.
Finally I set the BIOS setting to the failsafe settings, instead of
the optimized settings. ?That cured the problem!
So I guess that the settings to choose are somewhere between the two.
"Optimized" isn't really optimal unless it always works!

yes, there is. And that was NOT the end of the problems. A little while
later, the same thing happened. I am looking into how to apply the bios
updates. I found a way to apply the updates without having to use windoze.
Apparently there were no disk or other I/O errors.
However I am using a pci video card right now instead of a pci express.
I had a pcie, but one of the pin connections broke off, so I temporarily
went to a spare pci s3 card lying around.
I did notice that whenever I run something that continually writes to the
screen as fast as possible, it seems to trigger the failure.
I have another pcie on order.
