She doesn't have to be a member of sudoers though I would rather someone install updates, its not like leaving a Linux stock is rock solid and never needs to be patched. Do people unfamiliar with pcs really remove packages?

Ubuntu now tells you how to do it but they were thinking of less sophisticated users who were shying away from Linux because a root password can be a dangerous thing.
