If you're looking for a free and opensource tether option and don't want to take the more drastic step of switching to Cyanogen for proper USB tether support there is Azilink:
http://code.google.com/p/azilink/ It acts as an OpenVPN server running on the cellphone and implements NAT. You use ADB port forward over USB for USB tethering. No rooting of the phone required. The "client" software is the OpenVPN client for your respective platform with a special configuration file. Hardest part is installing ADB and OpenVPN client on the client, copying the config file and writing a two line script to start it all up. It worked well back when I used it and I even had OpenVPN to a remote server tunneled within OpenVPN to the phone and I didn't notice any problems.
