Easytag does look like the one to use. But when I went to install
it on centos, there was a long list of prerequisets. I am still trying to
figure out where the repositories are that I should be using with yum
to atuomatically go after the prereqs.
I have about 300 cds, audio and video that a friend wants to copy
onto his hard drive. After putting easytag on the back burner, I
looked at the actual .flac and .ogg files, and the song titles are
all in there in a simple format.
For example, the file
/Pink Floyd/Echoes 2 The Best of Pink Floyd $ vim 01\ -\ Track\ 1.flac
has near the front

TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM, etc are keywords with an equal sign to specify the
value, which is followed by a non printable character, usually a crlf.
Essentially, the tags are name / value pairs.
So if your track is flac or ogg, it is trivial to extract the album, song
title, and track information. I am writing a simple program top do just
that. And also to edit (replace) the existing info if I got it from
somewhere else.
E.g soundjuicer rips in flac files, but it does not get the cddb info.
I can get it some other way, and run the substitutions for Track 1
to be the actual song title on track 1, etc..
Once you have the artists name and the album, you can enter it in
an appropriate directory and check for duplicates.

So the 1Tb hard-drive that I kept my 600Gb music collection on died.
Using some ( Linux only ) recovery tools I was able to recover 599Gb of
the collection.
Now here is the bad news, there are no more directories and missing file
names. I was able to restore the file types ( mp3, flac, etc )
What I need "a clue" on is an application that can scan the recovery
drive and help me tag and name the files.
Also I really only need 100gb to maybe 200gb of the data since most are
repeats and some discographies that I really don't need.
So does anyone know of a program that can scan a disk for audio files
create a list and then allow one to work through re-tagging?
I am also looking for the ability to move the files in to a new structure.
If the tags are in tact I think that EasyTag might be the ticket. I've used
it to fill tags before, and I think it can do file renames as well.
