Mint did that with Cinnamon, but it too has some issues with Gnome2 vs Gnome3 libs. The main fallback people are going to as they bail from Gnome3 is Xfce -- and I have to admit I like Xfce and I find it very Gnome2-like. I like it better than MATE, personally, and it's what I recommend today to users that really liked Gnome2 and want it back. Neither MATE or Cinnamon are available as a package in Debian directly. MATE has a repository for Debian and many other distros: http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download Cinnamon has a repository for many distros, but not Debian: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61 The conclusion I've personally drawn concerning both of these projects is that they're band-aids; i.e. they're okay for the short-term, but questionable as a solution for the long-term, because the Gnome3 developers are more than likely going to continue to diverge in terms of compatability. -- Chris -- Chris Knadle [email protected] _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) Vassar College Dec 5 - SysAdmin Panel Jan 9 - High Performance Computing Feb 6 - February Meeting
