I do not have much experience with camera systems but I believe these are commonly sold as a set where the recording computer is also providing the PoE. This of course limits the distance the camera can be unless you have another switch between providing PoE to extend the distance. You can likely build your own with open source tools if you have specific needs that propietary tools are not meeting but you can likely accomplish the task cheaper and easier with a kit. If buying a kit, reviews on retail sites might provide the insight you seek and perhaps some examples of camera quality. Picture quality and retention are the main concerns as long as the kit provides a client meeting your OS needs to connect to the recorder, though if you have a chance to demo the client software I would recommend it as the few I have played with are awful. Viewing the camera directly in a browser does not provide playback functionality in the setups I have seen.
Matthias Anyone have any comments or experience with using PoE security cameras. I'm looking to setup something for our house since its already wired for ethernet. I'd like to add some IP cameras to a few rooms and outside - seems to make sense to leverage the already wired ports to provide power as well. Anyone do this before? Recommendations...?
