Robert, have him get an iphone. Apple just released V 2.0 which is apparently MS Exchange compatible with email. the base plan is $59/month though the phone is pricey. you'd have to check if that includes exchange interoperability though.
other option is a blackberry but that's a lot per month. or just a "smart-ish" phone. I have a sony-ericsson that can pull email down off an IMAP server. the interface is stupid though.
