I'm running the tiny cooler (like Joe) with some braided -10 lines
and Mocal t-stat sandwich plate.

I've got a thread on miataturbo.net that more or less documents what
I've tried:

I'm aiming to have a turbo Miata that is trackable for a full session
in the hottest of summer days. I think that's possible once I get the
big cooler installed next to radiator. That will dramatically
increase the oil capacity and place the oil cooler in direct air flow.

I would definitely recommend a t-stat sandwich plate. First step
would be an oil temp gauge to see what it looks like on the street.
