I know this isn't what you are talking about but the $$$ savings has never
been a good justification for buying a used econobox. Using your numbers:

15000 miles / 26mpg = 577 gal @ $3.50 = $2019.00
15000 miles / 40mpg = 375 gal @ $3.50 = $1312.50

$706.5 in gas savings if I ditch the Miata and replace it with a 78
Chevette.

What would more likely happen is that I would keep both Miatas and purchase
an additional car. Since I don't see myself taking the Chevette to Deals Gap
I'd probably only put 5K miles on the Vette in any given year. So, we are
now looking at numbers like this:

5K miles / 20mpg (my actual Miata's MPG) = 250 gal @ $3.50 = $875
5K miles / 40mpg = 125 gal @ $3.50 = $437.50

$437.50 in gas savings if I keep the Miata and buy a 78 Chevette. The
insurance, taxes, upkeep, hassle of having yet another car sitting around
means that there is no reason for me (financially) to ever buy an economy
car. None of this, however, affects my decision to build an 80MPG car which
would be yet another money pit for me to play with.
