I always use 4 jackstands, and then slide some spare wheels or concrete blocks under the car to keep me from being crushed if one of the stands slips or fails. I don't like the 2 jackstand thing at all.
I've got several kinds of stands laying around... I think my most recent purchase was from Harbor Freight.
