saw the Opels sitting towards the back of the shop under a layer of dust...I 
think I was one of the few to notice them and go take a look (I have some sort 
of problem with enjoying quirky troublesome old bikes and autos). I wondered 
what the story was. 
(Bill also has a line of Ducatis and other race bikes with the same layer of 
them sitting along the wall, each looked like it had a good story to tell)

Resting quietly right now, but I found a nice rust-free one in Utah and a total 
POS that a tree fell on. The POS has a good dash and nothing else, so it will 
be the practice "drop the miata engine from ten feet up and see what bends to 
make it fit" car, then I can do a clean job on the nice one.

          If I was getting 35MPG on my turbo'd miata I would be impressed.

          I can get anywhere from 30 to 15MPG on the road depending on how I 
drive, (much less on the track) I have 550 apparently (suppose to be 440) 
injectors.

          I have a Mark1 link with a AEM wideband, modified for temp comp, no 
sequential yet.

          I am thinking the engine only has so much mileage performance in it, 
the camshaft may well yield more performance.

          My 97 1Z TDI diesel gets from 35 pulling a Large 2 Harley  trailer 
thru the mountains at high speed, to 47mpg at 65 cruize set on any trip, and 
has 100+ hp with over 200ftlbs torque, just off idle.
          I have been unable to improve on 47, at the speeds I am willing to 
drive, with much injection timing tinkering.

          This car also has excellent aerodynamics, which the miata lacks, 

          The VW pickup truck I have with brand new injection components, and 
IDI motor, is lucky to get 40, usually gets 35 at speeds around here (65 being 
minimum).with AIR! It also has atrocious aero, even with the cap, but I know 
mileage gets better at moderate speeds, this ain't the first pickup I have 
owened.

          Point is, if you get 40.with the ability to go 100MPH  that would be 
outstanding.
          I would be totally amazed it you can get 50, even at 55MPH.

          OTOH the 79' fiesta with a webber carb VW engine ( IIRC1.6) got 45MPG 
(easy)  at 65MPH+ light with crappy areo.

          So YMMV

            I just swapped out the injectors in my MPG car (went from the 440's 
back to OEM) and had to decide whether or not to hack up the stock harness for 
sequential. I was hoping there was a significant difference so I stuck with 
sequential for the new injectors.

            I am installing some #4 heat range plugs with larger gaps in the 
MPG car today. Trying to chase down the miss fire problem I am having. I know 
people over estimate the MPG they get on their Miatas but DAMN I have been 
stuck at 35 MPG for weeks and can't get over that hump. I need to get the car 
out on the interstate for a nice long drive to see what my MPGs really are. I 
just can't understand how people are getting 28-30 on a stock Miata and my 
modified car doesn't get much better . I think it is time to check my 
speedometer against the GPS because I should be higher than this. I am running 
stock 14" 7-spoke wheels so I would figure my speed should be spot on but you 
never know.
