You use the torch to wave propane around all the potential vacuum
leaks. If you hit a leak the propane is drawn in and the idle goes
up. Very easy to pin point a spot as opposed to using carb spray
that goes everywhere. Since your pushing out the propane under
pressure you can stick the torch under a hose and spray it up on the
bottom of it.

I had the S hose crack and no amount of spraying carb cleaner showed
up a leak, 5 minutes with the propane and I found the leak since I
stuck it under the TB and the idle jumped.

No messy carb cleaner on the engine and no messy mustard either. :0

I'm not criticizing you, Larry. I just have trouble picturing what
you do with said torch, is all.

Works fine, I’m not the only one to use it. Why would it be any
different than those people that spray all that aerosol carb cleaner
around in the engine bay to find a vacuum leak?? This is probably
safer since the stuff dissipates, is easy to control and actually
might find the leak.

I have to admit, I'm having trouble picturing it myself!

Nah, you're not pumping gallons of propane in there, your using the
smallest

amount that comes out of the torch and since it's heavier than air
it drops

out of the engine bay quickly.

Unlit propane torch is my favorite method.

Subject: Help diagnosing an intake leak

After what Ray pointed out to me (below), I looked at some old DLL
logs

and saw that my Idle MAP reading that is now about 70 used to be in
the 40

range. So I slapped myself around a bit and started to look for a
vacuum

leak. I haven't found anything particularly bad.

Anyone have any tip or tricks on looking for an intake leak? I tried

pressurizing the intake to a few PSI with my compressor and
listening for

hissing, but it has
been really hard to localize- possibly going through

an open intake valve?. One thing that I was wondering- how much of
 the

stock 1.8l engine's cycle has all of the intake valves closed? I
did find

a better place to put the fuel pressure regulator's vacuum hose, but

wiggling stuff around hasn't brought me any closer to bringing the
vacuum

down to a more appropriate value.

Matt
