As for temperatures causing the noise, it had started making the noise in the summer, but was MUCH louder yesterday than when it was warmer. That said, it hardly made a sound this morning; the noise didn't start until about 3/4 through my short commute. I was able to let the car idle without a sound while I cleaned frost off the windows. An odd thing that I noticed is that it seems the noise goes away immediately when I put in the clutch, though I think this may be more due to the fact that RPM's drop very quickly--the noise can come in slowly at idle, especially if I rev the engine slowly. If I depress the clutch pedal at idle, the noise does not change.
The noise normally comes in when the car is under normal operation, and slowly increases in pitch from barely audible to very loud (though again, it was MUCH quieter today). Basically, the sound is a continuous shriek that, if I recall, does not change pitch with RPM. If there's rubbing, it's metal on metal (because the sound comes and goes, I doubt that's it). -Bryan --- On Mon, 10/27/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [NPC] OTM Making high-pitched noise...belt? For those that don't know, it's a beat-up '99 Civic DX with about 174k on the clock. I had the timing belt and a motor mount replaced over the summer and have driven it maybe once a month on average since then. When I was going to take it in to the job, the car had been making a high pitched sound at idle and when the car was moving that would come and go from time to time. The noise seemed to be coming from the area of either the water pump or timing belt area. Strangely enough, the noise completely died on the way to the shop and didn't come back...until now. Now it's louder than ever and really has me worried considering that the Miata won't get driven much (of course, the Miata is most likely either in need of a clutch master or slave soon...). Any guesses what the noise could be? -Bryan Does it make the sound only when the engine or the ambient temps are colder? Does it do it only when it's raining? When, specifically (If Possible), and under what conditions do you experience the sound? Is the sound more of a shriek or does it include and whirring or rubbing?
