The rod connector is screwed in on the first half turn that holds the flapper fully shut. That gives good enough action to fully open the gate at 10psi (as tested with a compressor). Unfortunately I have trouble getting any pressure accurate to test below that. Maybe it's cracking open at 5psi until it's gradually opened all the way at 10psi.
