I lost a high mileage engine to RP (~150k). It started to consume oil immediately after switching from Mobil 1. I changed back after 2 days but the damage was done, #1 rings failed. It was probably on the way out but I believe RP hastened it's demise. The distributor told me it was likely due to the cleaning properties in the oil removing deposits from the rings. Too bad they don't print this anywhere on the label. I would avoid using RP in a used engine, I will avoid it completely.
I've substituted Amsoil for Mobil 1 Extended a couple of times with no discernable difference. My motors I religiously changed the Mobil 1, rings lasted 1 season (figure like 5-10 run hours?) With Royal Purple that hasn't been an issue. My uninformed biases are that Amsoil has gone downhill over the years, Mobil 1 has gotten better, and Redline has always been fine. My direct experience with Royal Purple was horrific. I put it in before a track weekend and changed it out on Saturday night. I've never heard so much lifter noise from a Miata engine in my life.
